Segedunum Roman Fort - 12.30-2pm
£5 per child. Advance booking is essential.
Tyneside is home to a collection of impressive pre-historic collections. Find out more by taking part in our double workshop day.
Start your day at the Great North Museum: Hancock by taking part in a prehistory workshop before heading over to Segedunum for the Boudica's Britannia workshop.
At the Great North Museum: Hancock, young people will get to investigate an assemblage of Stone Age and Bronze Age replica artefacts. They will be asked to identify the objects, discuss what they think they would have been used for and who might have owned them.
Then travel over to Segedunum and step back in time with Gratta from the Brigantes as the gallery is transformed into a Celtic home. Children will explore the art, beliefs and ways of life of tribal Britons. They will learn about the different types of food they ate compared to the Romans, decorate their hands, make a knot bracelet and learn how to build a wattle fence. To finish, the children will settle in around a crackling fire to hear the story of Boudica.
Useful information:
Session numbers are capped, so book soon to secure your space.
These sessions are aimed at KS2 level children. We ask that parents accompany their children and are responsible for them during the visit. We suggest that younger siblings aren’t in attendance, except for babes in arms. This is due to limited room capacity and for health and safety reasons in respect of the objects in use.
We recommend travelling by Metro. From Monument station it takes 10 minutes to travel between Newcastle and Wallsend. Alternatively, you could choose to drive between venues. Segedunum Roman Fort has a large car park on site, and Newcastle has a series of city centre car parks.
