On-Site School Visits Covid-19 Measures

Segedunum holds the We’re Good to Go Industry Standard. This means that our business has followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, has a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing.

Measures we will take

  • Reduce number of children visiting site at one time. We can accommodate one class (max 30) from one school per day
  • The class will be divided into two smaller groups for workshops with a maximum of 15 children per group and at least one member of staff, each group will be facilitated
  • Restrict contact with general public on fort site and Roman Gallery during school visit (schools will be able to book out a time slot)
  • Facilitators and museum staff will maintain a 2m distance from children and teaching staff during indoor and outdoor sessions. Facilitators and museum staff will wear a face covering when moving around the museum
  • Windows (and doors where possible) will be kept open during sessions
  • Floor 3 (activity room, lunch space, stairs, lift and toilets) will be restricted to school use. These areas will be thoroughly cleaned before and after each group visits
  • Cloakrooms will not be used. Children will be asked to place coats on the backs of their chairs. Bags will be kept in the cafe area. Children will be advised not to leave valuables in their bags or coats as this area will not be securely locked
  • Workshop content will be adapted to avoid touching objects which cannot be cleaned between sessions and to avoid close contact between children
  • Objects which are handled will only be handled by one child per session and will be thoroughly cleaned or quarantined for 72 hours between each session
  • Signage will indicate social distancing measures in areas such as passing places along central walkways, one-way systems in the Roman Gallery and waiting lines in busier areas
  • Hand washing will be encouraged before and after sessions. Hand sanitiser and soap will be provided on entry to separate learning spaces, in toilets and lunch areas
  • Children will be reminded to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth with unclean hands
  • Regular surface cleaning will take place throughout the museum
  • If a member of staff or volunteer has developed Covid-19 and were recently on site, a member of staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) or Newcastle City Council (NCC) will contact Public Health England to discuss the case, identify people who have been in contact with them and will take advice on any actions or precautions that should be taken.

Measures we ask schools to take:

  • On arrival at the museum, we ask one member of staff to come to the reception desk first to register the group. This will allow staff to ensure the shop area is clear before bringing the class into the museum
  • Ask parents not to send children in and teaching staff not to come to the museum if they are unwell
  • Adults and children over the age of 11 years must wear a face covering whilst moving around the museum unless they are exempt from doing so
  • Rearrange the visit if any members of the class or staff are self-isolating with Covid symptoms
  • Take measures to ensure the museum is contacted should any children or accompanying adults develop Covid symptoms following their visit to the museum
  • Adhere to social distancing measures
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided when entering spaces and washing hands thoroughly before and after learning sessions, before eating and after using the toilets
  • Encourage implementation of our current Local Authority and National Government Covid-19 safety advice and practices with children. Please be aware that this may change and contact the museum for latest status.
